deLong designs by Michele deLong
about the artist

michele deLong-the history
At the age of nine I began making silver jewelry with my mother in Pennsylvania. In high school I majored in art and began selling my work. I enrolled at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia and received my basic art background. I then studied at the Tylor Art School at Temple University in Philadelphia under Stanley Lechtzin and at Philadelphia College of Art with Olaf Skoogfars. During that time I apprenticed with Naomi Davis in her studio.

I have shown my work at the American Craft Gallery in New York City, the Art Alliance in Philadelphia, as well as various San Francisco and Seattle gallaries. In 1993 I participated in a three person show with my son, Christopher Sutton, a photographer, and my mother, Jeanne DeLong, an accomplished jeweler and weaver. As you can imagine, this show was extremely gratifying!

For eight years I owned and operated my gallery, Designer's Workshop, on Orcas Island, Washington. More recently, my travels throughout the North and Central America have allowed me to explore more artforms. I am inspired by nature and primitive art from around the world. You can see this in the animal series as well as in the ancient peoples series.

Currently my jewelry is being shown in gallaries in the United States and Canada. Check out where to find deLong designs for a listing of the gallaries which are currently displaying my work to see if there is a gallary near you.

michele deLong-the evolution contiues
More recently I have been painting and this is my true love. I can't get enough of the colors! I have found great satisfaction painting all that I see on my travels--everything from the interesting people living in Mexico, to the incredibly beauty of the colors and land around my home on Orcas Island. I love color!

Unfortunately I can no longer lug all of my paints through airports and across borders (and my bribes no longer work on family members) so I'm moving into watercolors...a whole new world to explore!
